Document Information for GDS and PDS dentists regarding Vocational Training payments

Payments in respect of vocational training are paid to a contractor who employs a Vocational Trainee (VT). They are intended to meet the salary costs of employing the VT, provide payment to the performer who's providing the vocational training to the VT and, to provide a payment to the contractor to cover service costs.

Service Costs payments are non-superannuable, however, both the Training Grant and the VT salary are 100% superannuable.

What is the eligibility criteria?

A contractor will be eligible to receive payments under this section where:
  • The contractor employs or engages a dentist who is a Trainer;
  • The contractor has employed a VT under a contract of employment for period of 1 years full-time employment (or an equivalent period of part-time employment), or
  • Any other period which is a “relevant period of employment” for the purposes of regulation 28(3) of the Performers Lists Regulations; and
  • Under that contract of employment, the contractor has agreed to pay the VT a monthly salary at a full-time (at least 35 hours per week) or the amount specified for that period pro-rata if the VT is part-time.
Any attendance by a VT at a day release course in connection with the vocational training scheme is to be included in the calculation of their contracted hours. Click here to view more information online.

  • A training grant, if the VT is full-time (i.e. has contracted hours of at least 35 hours per week), or the amount specified for that period pro-rata if the VT is part-time;
  • Reimbursement of the salary which the contractor has paid to the VT, less (if the VT is a member of the NHS Pension Scheme) the VT’s employee superannuation contributions in respect of that VT’s salary (see paragraph 4.1(b)), if the VT is full-time (i.e. has contracted hours of at least 35 hours per week), or the amount specified for that period pro-rata if the VT is part-time;
  • Where a salary is reimbursed pursuant to sub-paragraph (b), reimbursement of the amount of any employer's National Insurance contributions which are payable by the contractor in respect of that salary; and
  • A sum that represents the service cost to the contractor of employing the VT, if the VT is full-time (i.e. has contracted hours of at least 35 per week), or the amount specified for that period pro-rata if the VT is part-time.
