Document Are prisoners entitled to free NHS dental treatment?

NHS dental treatment is available to all prisoners and people in a young offender's institution, this also applies if they are / were on day release. As per the FP17 / FP17O, prisoners and people in a young offender's institution are exempt from paying NHS dental charges, this also includes Regulation 11.

This service is delivered according to the patients’ dental need and length of sentence. The service:
 
  • Is provided by an appropriately qualified person
     
  • Is provided in line with professional standards

  • Adheres to infection control guidelines

  • Is provided in suitable, properly equipped accommodation
Prisoners are given information on how to access NHS dental care; this includes the treatment they're entitled to and how to make an appointment.
