Document How do I make a complaint about a dental practice?

England

In the first instance you should take up your complaint with the dental practice, you should ask for a copy of their complaints procedure and you should follow this first, usually, the first step will normally be to raise the matter either in writing or by speaking to the dental practitioner involved.

Alternatively, we understand not all patients are happy about complaining directly to their dental practice. In this instance, you can make your complaint to NHS England.

Once you have received a final reply from the practice / NHS England, if you're not satisfied with the outcome of your complaint, you have the right to complain to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman can only deal with a complaint once you have exhausted your local complaints procedure through your practice / NHS England.

Wales

In the first instance you should take up your complaint with the dental practice, you should ask for a copy of their complaints procedure and you should follow this first, usually, the first step will normally be to raise the matter either in writing or by speaking to the dental practitioner involved.

If you're not satisfied with the outcome of your complaint with the practice, you can raise the matter with your Local Health Board (LHB). This is called local resolution, and most cases are resolved at this stage.

If you want advice on how you should go about making your complaint you can ask for advice and support from your Local Community Health Council who provide a free independent advice and advocacy service. More information is available on the NHS Dental Services website.

Once you have received a final reply from the practice / LHB, if you're not satisfied with the outcome of your complaint, you have the right to complain to the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales.

The Ombudsman can only deal with a complaint once you have exhausted your local complaints procedure through your practice / Local Health Body.
