Document What is a Practice Inspection?

Formal practice inspections are carried out by NHSBSA Clinical Advisers, usually at the request of a Commissioner (Local Area Team). These may be as a result of concerns raised by patients or practice staff.

In Wales, there's a three yearly rolling programme of routine practice inspections ran in conjunction with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW). All Clinical Advisers hold the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners (UK) Certificate of Dental Practice Appraisal.

A practice inspection involves completion of a checklist covering a wide range of areas including premises, required documentation, policies, radiological equipment, infection control, health and safety and clinical environment. You can view this information and a copy of the practice inspection document on the NHS Dental Services website.
