Document recently updated How long is the EHIC valid for?

An EHIC is generally valid for 5 years. However, applicants who are required to supply evidence of their entitlement, or additional information in support of their application, will have the expiry date of their EHIC set to the expiry date of their evidence. This end date will therefore reflect the end of their S1, visa or course of study.

If you intend to move abroad permanently then the expiry date of your EHIC will be set to the date that you are expecting to leave the UK.

After 31 December 2020, your EHIC may no longer be valid, regardless of the expiry date listed on your current certificate. This is dependent on whether or not you are covered under the Withdrawal Agreement.

You'll still be able to access healthcare through EHIC for visits that begin after 1 January 2021 if you're either:

  • a UK state pensioner living in the EU before 31 December 2020
  • a UK student studying in the EU before 31 December 2020
  • a 'frontier worker' (someone who works in one state and lives in another) before 31 December 2020, for as long as you continue to be a frontier worker in the host state
  • an EU national living in the UK before 31 December 2020

You are therefore strongly advised, as always, to purchase appropriate travel insurance, even if you do meet the above criteria as your EHIC will not cover all healthcare.
