Document Am I entitled to apply for a UK issued EHIC?

You are entitled to a UK issued EHIC if you meet one of the following criteria:
  • You permanently live in the UK
     
  • You are living in another EEA country or Switzerland, in receipt of a UK exportable benefit and have a valid registered S1
     
  • You are working in another EEA country or Switzerland and paying compulsory NI contributions to the UK
     
  • You are studying in another EEA country or Switzerland as part of a UK course
     
  • You normally live in the UK but are studying in another EEA country or Switzerland which is not a compulsory part of a UK course (your EHIC will be valid for the duration of the course)
     
  • You are an Au Pair or Nanny living and working in another EEA country or Switzerland (your EHIC will be valid for 12 months)
     
  • You are a dependent of those who meet the above criteria

If you do not meet any of the above criteria you will need to apply for an EHIC in the country that you are currently living in.

If you have a UK issued EHIC but no longer meet any of the above criteria, please return your card to:
