Document Who is entitled to a free NHS sight test in England?

You will get free sight tests if one of the following apply:
  • Under 16
     
  • Aged 16,17 or 18 in full-time education
     
  • Aged 60 or over
     
  • A diagnosed glaucoma patient
     
  • Advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
     
  • Aged 40 or over and are a parent, brother, sister, son or daughter of a diagnosed glaucoma patient
     
  • Diagnosed as diabetic
     
  • Registered as severely sight impaired/ blind or sight-impaired/ partially sighted
     
  • Need complex lenses
     
  • Someone whose sight test is carried out through the hospital eye department as part of the management of your eye condition

Also, if you get or are included in an award of someone getting:

  • Income Support
     
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (Incapacity Benefit or Disability Living Allowance do not count as they are not income-related)
     
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
     
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
     
  • Are entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
     
  • Named on a valid HC2 certificate
     
  • Universal Credit (UC) (in certain circumstances*)
*As of 1 November 2015, if you require help with health costs in England or Scotland, Universal Credit only exempts you if either;
  • you are receiving Universal Credit as a single person or as a member of a couple and had no earnings or combined net earnings of £435 or less during the most recent assessment period, or;
  • you are receiving Universal Credit as a single person or as a member of a couple which includes one or more of the child element, the limited capability for work element (LCW) or the limited capability for work or work related activity element (LCWRA), and had no earnings or combined net earnings of £935 or less during the most recent assessment period.
Your assessment period will run for a calendar month from the date of your claim for Universal Credit (which will be shown on your award notice), and between the same dates each month after that.

To get help with your health costs in Wales, you will qualify regardless of the above additional criteria if you receive Universal Credit.
