Document What can I do if I have applied as a dependant student but I am independent?

f you have applied as a dependent student but should have applied as an independent one, please see below for guidance.

If your original application is pending / active

If you are a single student, you need to send the appropriate correct evidence to prove your independent status along with a covering letter advising that you have applied as dependent by mistake and also your student coversheet. If you are applying as independent due to supporting yourself from your own earnings for at least 36 months, please also provide a covering letter with the names of your employers / any benefits you were receiving, what dates you worked / received benefits from and to, and whether periods of employment were full or part time along with evidence covering the full 36 months.

Where possible an assessor will amend your existing application, however, in certain cases you may be asked to submit a new application. You will be contacted by an assessor if this is the case.

If you are cohabiting, you need to contact us to ask for your application to be rejected and then you need to complete a new application that includes your spouse / civil partner’s / partner's financial information. You need to send in any requested evidence which has not previously been sent along with your student coversheet.

In order to change your status this must be done, and all supporting evidence received, within nine months of the enrolment date (six months if your academic year started prior to 1 September 2017) otherwise it cannot be changed.

If your original application has been approved

If you are a single student, you need to complete a change of circumstances in your BOSS account and choose the relevant date that it is effective from. This date needs to match the enrolment period date if you wish to be classed as independent from the start of your academic year. If however you are changing to independent part way through the year, the date will be the date the change occurred and you must send in any requested evidence which has not been previously sent along with your student coversheet.

If you are cohabiting, you need to complete a new application and send in any requested evidence which has not previously been sent along with your student coversheet.
