Document How much can I claim for Childcare Allowance?

If your child is in registered childcare you can claim 85% of your actual childcare costs up to a maximum amount.

However, for all students the amount awarded will depend on your circumstances and the income available to you and your family. Therefore, not all students who apply for Childcare Allowance will be entitled to receive it.

The current maximum amount payable is £128.78 per week for one child and £191.45 per week for two or more children.

For example, if you make an application for Childcare and claim for one child in registered childcare costing £100 per week. As 85% of this is £85 this is what you can claim.

If you make an application for Childcare and claim for one child in registered childcare costing £200 per week. As 85% of this would be £170 it is over the maximum amount you can claim so we will calculate your possible entitlement at £128.78 per week.

If you are a new or non-final year continuing student you can claim childcare costs for the full 52 weeks of your academic year including holidays.

If you are in your final year of study you can claim childcare costs from the first day of your academic year until the term end date.

You may also claim for retainer childcare costs if they are part of your contract with the provider and are within the dates of your academic year. These costs should be included as part of your weekly amounts you declare on the childcare application.

If your childcare provider charges you separately for the cost of meals, these can also be included in your overall weekly costs but we will only pay the maximum amount as noted above.

Please remember to keep your receipts for all childcare costs you pay.
