Document Which benefits automatically entitle me to help with health costs?

You're automatically entitled to help with your health if you get, or are included in an award of someone getting, one of the following benefits:
  • Income Support

  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance

  • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance

  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit

  • Universal Credit (in certain circumstances only)

'New Style' Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) / Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is available in some circumstances for people who are entitled to apply for Universal Credit; It's always Contribution Based and wouldn't automatically entitle you. As you can receive this payment alongside Universal Credit; you may still be entitled to automatic help with health costs if your Universal Credit award meets the criteria.

If you get, or are included in an award of someone getting, one of the above benefits you don't need to apply for help through the NHS Low Income Scheme.

If you're not getting, or aren't included in an award of someone getting, a benefit above, then you may wish to apply for help through the NHS Low Income Scheme by completing a HC1 form.

More information about all benefits can be found on the GOV.UK website.
