Document How are accommodation costs calculated when I am on a placement?

Your course started prior to 1 September 2012

You may be reimbursed the total costs of your placement address up to a maximum of 110% of your term time accommodation costs. If your placement accommodation costs less than 110% of your normal term time accommodation, you may be reimbursed for the full placement accommodation cost. If the placement accommodation is higher, you can only be reimbursed 110% of your normal term time accommodation cost. However if you have an income assessed bursary award of £0.00, your reimbursement will be subject to a travel disregard.

Example

You pay £55 per week in rented term time accommodation and go to a 2 week practice placement which costs £65 per week for accommodation.

Your term time costs are calculated as £55 x 2 weeks + 10% = £121

Your practice placement costs are calculated as £65 x 2 weeks = £130

You would be reimbursed the lowest figure which is £121

If your award has been assessed at the parental home rate and you normally reside with your parents during term time:

The cost of your term time address is nominally set at £20 per day.

For students attending a London based placement, the cost is nominally set at £30 per day.

If you normally reside in your own home during term time but you have no costs as your mortgage has been fully paid, you will also be subject to the above parental home rates. You would be required to send evidence to show that your mortgage has been paid in full.

You will be unable to claim accommodation costs when you are no longer being charged for your term time accommodation

If you live with friends, the cost of your term time address would be treated as NIL as you have no upkeep costs for the property and would only be paying costs for the placement accommodation. As you are not obliged to meet the cost of two accommodations, you cannot claim any placement accommodation costs.

You are also permitted to claim the cost of one return journey each week between your normal term time address and your temporary accommodation whilst you are on placement. These travel costs can only be refunded if the daily travel cost to and from your placement is in excess of your normal daily travel cost to and from university.

Travel costs between your temporary accommodation and your placement site may be claimed in addition but must also be in excess of your normal daily travel costs to and from university.

Your university will be required to sign off on all placement claims.

Your course started on or after 1 September 2012
