Document How do I opt out of the NHS Pension Scheme?

To opt out of the NHS Pension Scheme, you must complete the SD502 ‘Application to leave the NHS Pension Scheme’ form. You can obtain this form from the NHS Pensions website. You will complete Part A of this form and the pass the form to your employer who will complete Part B. The date on which your decision to opt out of the Scheme will be effective from depends on the date on which your SD502 is received by your employer.
  • If your SD502 is received before the end of your first pay period, you will be treated as never have been a member of the scheme and any contributions taken will be refunded by your employer.

  • If your SD502 is received after the end of your first pay period, the decision to opt out will take effect from the first day of the next pay period following receipt of the SD502.
If you have stated on your SD502 that you wish to opt out from a later date, the decision to opt out will be effective from the first day of the next pay period following the date given.
