Document Is there a Scheme Pays option for the NHS Money Purchase AVC Scheme?

Yes. We offer mandatory and voluntary scheme pays to pay your annual allowance charge because you have contributed more pension contributions into the NHS Money Purchase AVC Scheme than you have available annual allowance. This could be the standard, tapered or alternative annual allowance.

To make use of this facility you need to complete the NHS MPAVC Scheme Pays Election Notice (SPE3) which is available by contacting the Annual Allowance Team Manager at NHS Pensions. The SPE3 must be returned by 31 July:

Tax Year

31 July 2020

31 July 2021

31 July 2022

31 July 2023

You should complete and send us your election earlier if one of the following events takes place before the deadline, either you:

  • retire - the election should be completed and sent to us before your NHS MPAVC Scheme benefits become payable; or

  • reach age 75 - the election should be completed and received by us before your 75th birthday.

We will write and notify you that we have accepted your scheme pays election and whether it is being paid using our mandatory or voluntary scheme pays facility, or both.

We recover the cost of paying your annual allowance charge by taking this from your fund value.

More details about the tapered and alternative annual allowance can be found in the Pension Savings Statement Guide and factsheets on our website.
