Document Can I continue to pay pension contributions while on Maternity / Paternity Leave?

Most members will be able to continue to contribute to their pension throughout any period of absence for maternity, paternity, parental or adoption purposes if they were already contributing to the scheme before they began their period of leave.

The exceptions to this are locum practitioners and bank staff (although bank staff should first check their contract of employment or discuss with their NHS employer as to whether or not they are eligible to receive pay during such absences).

More information on maternity, paternity, parental or adoption leave is available on the NHS Pensions website.
