Document When would it be necessary for me to post a retirement benefit claim form (AW8) to NHS Pensions?

A paper retirement benefit claim form (AW8) must be posted to NHS Pensions in the following circumstances only:
  • The employer does not have access to Pensions Online (POL).
  • The member's record has been closed down with exit code 02, 'Resignation or dismissal in consequence of an offence of a fraudulent nature or misconduct'.
  • The member is claiming benefits from any date that is not immediately after they stopped contributing to the scheme, and they were under normal pension age when they opted out of the Scheme. You should also submit an AW8 Supplementary form for these members.
  • The member is taking Draw Down from the 2008 Section or the 2015 Scheme. Please see the Draw Down application factsheet on our website for the additional information you will need to provide.
NHS Pensions will return AW8 applications in instances where the information provided is incomplete or where the AW8 should have been submitted via Pensions Online.
