Document Who is entitled to an adult dependant’s pension?

You are automatically covered by the Schemes’ life assurance benefits from the day you join the NHS Pension Scheme. The Scheme provides for the payment of an adult dependant's pension following your death and is payable to:

  • a legal spouse
  • a registered civil partner
  • a nominated qualifying partner where membership is on or after 1 April 2008 and the eligibility conditions are met as detailed on form PN1.

It is important to note that if your last day of Scheme membership was before 1 April 2008 your surviving partner's adult dependent's pension will stop if they subsequently marry or cohabit.
A widower, civil partner or nominated qualifying partner's pension will normally be based on Scheme membership from 6 April 1988.
