Document If a surviving partner in receipt of a dependant partners pension marries or forms a civil partnership, will they continue to receive the dependants pension?

If the scheme member had scheme membership on or after 1 April 2008, the partners pension is payable for life regardless of whether the partner marries, forms a civil partnership or lives with someone else as a spouse or partner.

If the scheme member left the scheme before 1 April 2008, the partner's pension will normally end if the partner marries, forms a civil partnership or lives with someone else as a spouse or partner. In these cases, the person receiving the partner's pension should notify NHS Pensions if they enter into a new partnership.

In exceptional circumstances the partner's pension may be re-instated if the person who is receiving the pension would suffer severe financial hardship if it were withdrawn. In these cases they would need to write to NHS Pensions giving full details of their circumstances.
