Document How much Additional Pension can I buy and how much will it cost?

Additional Pension (AP) is bought in units of £250 annual pension, from a minimum of £250. If you are a member of the 1995/2008 Scheme the maximum amount of Additional Pension you can buy is £5,000.

The 2015 Scheme has a higher maximum amount which is currently £6,767.95 (this may change year to year) for the Scheme year 2018/19, any purchase of a lower amount must however continue to be a multiple of £250. Because this is a separate scheme, the limits operate independently. If you have already bought £5,000 Additional Pension in the 1995 or 2008 Scheme and move to the 2015 Scheme, you can purchase a further £6,797.95 in the 2015 Scheme.

The cost of purchasing Additional Pension varies depending on a number of factors including:

  • Your age when you start buying Additional Pension

  • When you plan to retire

  • The type of cover you buy either to increase just your pension or both your pension and that of your dependants

  • How much Additional Pension you choose to buy

There is an Additional Pension calculator on the NHS Pensions website that will work out the cost for you and produce a tailored application form (AP1).

For further information, please see the Additional Pension factsheet on our website.
