Document Can I rejoin the NHS Pension Scheme if I return to NHS work after ill health retirement?

If you have retired from the 1995 Section on the grounds of ill health, you can rejoin the Scheme if:

  • you retired before 1 April 2008. You can rejoin the Scheme if you are under age 50 at the point of rejoining for the first time*

  • you retired on or after 1 April 2008 with a Tier 1 ill health pension. You can rejoin the Scheme if you are under age 50

  • you retired on or after 1 April 2008 with a Tier 2 ill health pension. You can rejoin the Scheme 12 months after you start further employment in the NHS if you are under age 50. Such a member shall be paid a Tier 1 pension in place of the Tier 2 pension.

  • You have not exchanged your pension for a one-off lump sum payment due to terminal illness.
*If you rejoin for the first time before 50, and subsequently move to a new NHS job after the age of 50, you can still pay into the Scheme because you rejoined for the first time before 50.

*If you had Special Class and/or Mental Health Officer status and rejoin before 50, you can still obtain this status providing your break in employment was less than five years.

If you have retired from the 2008 Section on the grounds of ill health, you can rejoin the Scheme if:
  • you are aged under 75

  • you have not already built up 45 years Scheme membership

  • you have not exchanged your pension for a one-off lump sum payment due to terminal illness

  • you retired with a Tier 2 ill health pension you can rejoin the Scheme 12 months after you start further employment. Such a member shall be paid a Tier 1 pension in place of the Tier 2 pension.
