Document Can I return to work if I am receiving a Tier 1 ill health pension?

Yes, however certain restrictions apply if you return to work in the NHS. There are no restrictions if you return to non-NHS work.

If you receive Tier 1 ill health benefits and return to work in the NHS before your Normal Pension Age (NPA) and your earnings exceed a certain limit, some of your pension will be subject to abatement.

Should you decide to undertake any unpaid voluntary work within or outside the NHS then your scheme benefits will not be affected; however you should declare the fact that you are doing voluntary work on any forms you receive from NHS Pensions.

You can find more information about working after retirement or returning to work following ill health retirement on our website.
