Document Why do I have to provide my National Insurance (NI) or NHS number when it is not printed on the card?

To be eligible for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from the UK the applicant should be resident in the UK. Your NI or NHS number is used as proof that you are eligible to an EHIC.

This number is not printed on the card as we are obliged to comply with EEA standards regarding the format of the card.

We are unable to process an application for the main applicant and any partner without an NI or NHS number.
