Document I am leaving the UK for academic or work related study (internship) in another EEA country, can I apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?

If you're a UK, EEA or Swiss national who usually lives in the UK permanently and you are going to study or do an internship in another EEA country, you may be entitled to a UK-issued European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for the duration of your course.

If you're a non UK, EEA or Swiss National you'll be entitled to a UK-issued 'student EHIC' valid until the end of the course or the end of your visa (whichever is shorter).

You will need to download and print the application form and send it to us by post – you cannot apply online or over the phone. If you already have a valid EHIC you will need to return it with your new application.

You may lose your entitlement to a UK issued EHIC if your circumstances change, for example, if you start working in the EEA country where you are studying. In those circumstances, you may need to register for state healthcare in the country where you are studying or obtain private health insurance.

If your studies are part of a UK course

Make sure that when you submit your student EHIC application, you include a letter from your university or college confirming:

  • The name and address of your UK educational institution

  • The address where you are studying overseas

  • Details of the qualification you are studying

  • The date your course started / is due to start

  • The date you're due to finish your course.
The course dates must be for your entire university or college course (from the start of your first year to the end of your final year), not just the period you're studying abroad.

If your studies are not part of a UK course

You're entitled to a student EHIC as long as you intend to return to the UK at the end of the course.

Make sure that when you submit your student EHIC application, you state whether you intend to return to the UK at the end of your course and include a letter from your university or college confirming:
  • The address of where you will be studying overseas

  • Details of the qualification you are studying

  • The date your course started / is due to start

  • The date you're due to finish your course.
The course dates must be for your entire university or college course (from the start of your first year to the end of your final year), not just the period you're studying abroad.
