Document Digital Certificates - Midwives

Please use the following questions to answer your query;

How do I register to provide digital Maternity Exemption certificates?

If you're a midwife registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), you can register online to provide digital Maternity Exemption certificates.

When registering, we'll require your:

  • Surname

  • Date of birth

  • NMC PIN

  • NHSmail address and password (This must be an nhs.net account; we cannot accept nhs.uk accounts)

If you're a GP registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), a practice nurse or a health visitor who wishes to provide digital Maternity Exemption certificates, you cannot self-register.

Instead, you'll need to email nhsbsa.healthcosts@nhs.net and include your:

  • Name

  • GMC reference number / NMC reference number

  • NHSmail address (This must be an nhs.net account; we cannot accept nhs.uk accounts)
Once we've received your email, we'll register you on the system and you'll receive an email containing your login details within 5 working days.

You'll then be able to use the online service as normal.

What is a General Medical Council (GMC) / Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) number?

A NMC / GMC number is a number given to you when you're first registered with the GMC / NMC.

This number is unique to you.

What should I do if the online system isn't available / I receive an error message?

If the online application form isn't available or you receive an error message at any stage of the process, please:

  • Check to see whether you're already registered (the system will not allow you to register twice) by logging into the system using your NHSmail credentials

  • Wait a few moments and try again by refreshing your screen (press F5)

  • Check to ensure your NHSmail address has no special characters (e.g. !#$%&'*+-/=?)

If your email address has special characters in it or you've tried the above and you're still getting an error, please contact us.
