Document What is the Exceptional Support Fund and who can apply for it?

The Exceptional Support Fund (ESF) is available to eligible students experiencing severe and genuine financial difficulty during their studies who have exhausted all other means of funding.

Students must meet the general eligibility criteria for the Learning Support Fund and must show a clear shortfall between their income and expenditure to receive a payment. We will use your living costs to assess this and you must have already applied for all other available avenues of support.

The Exceptional Support Fund is not for the purpose of:
  • making emergency payments
  • meeting the cost of tuition fees where the student has not taken out a full tuition fee loan
  • subsidising mismanagement of individual finances
  • funding non-essential lifestyle expenditure
Further information, including ESF Application Guidance, can be found in the Exceptional Support Fund section of our website.
