Document What is retirement in the Interests of the Efficiency of the Service (IOE)?

Retirement in the Interests of the Efficiency of the Service (IOE) refers to instances when a Scheme member has given valuable NHS service in the past but is no longer capable of doing so. This might be because of new or expanded duties, or a decline in the ability to perform existing duties efficiently but not so as to qualify them for ill health retirement. If retired on these terms, the member is able to take their pension before Normal Pension Age without any reduction for taking it early.

This type of retirement is available at an employer’s discretion; however employers would be expected to consider alternatives before agreeing to this type of early retirement.
