Document Will NHS Pensions offer eligible members the option to take their pension benefits as a one off lump sum (trivial commutation)?

Yes, we will automatically write to any member where the capital value of their NHS pension benefits and any other pension benefits (excluding State Pension benefits) does not exceed £6,000. Members will be asked to choose whether they want their pension paid as a trivial commutation lump sum or as a normal pension.

For members whose total capital value is more than £6,000 but not more than £30,000, NHS Pensions would not automatically invite the member to apply for trivial commutation; however in these circumstances the member could still write to NHS Pensions at the time of making an application for benefits to apply for trivial commutation.

For further information, please see the Trivial commutation factsheet on our website.
