Document Can mental health work outside the NHS count towards Mental Health Officer benefits?

If you have worked with mentally ill patients outside the NHS, including work abroad, or have Mental Health Officer (MHO) membership that is no longer reckonable in the scheme, you may be able to count this time towards the 20 years needed to double membership.

The period may only count towards establishing the 20 years required to double membership and is not reckonable towards the calculation of benefits. Taking into account this additional time, you cannot double membership before age 50. If you think this applies to you, please write to us including your contact details, details of relevant jobs and employers and job descriptions if possible, subject to confirmation.

For more information, please see the Mental Health Officer (MHO) factsheet on our website.
