Document Why have I been sent a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) for my prescriptions?

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) operates the Prescription Exemption Checking Service (PECS) and checks prescription claims on a monthly basis. If you have incorrectly claimed for prescriptions and your prescription is checked, you will be sent a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

The PCN will request payment for the prescription charges and an additional penalty charge, which is five times the amount owed (up to a maximum of £100).

If payment isn't received within the required timescale, you may be liable for an additional surcharge and further court proceedings.

If you hold a valid Medical exemption certificate there could be a number of reasons for this.

The most common example is address related, often the address registered for the certificate is either an old address or a correspondence address and doesn't match the address held at the doctors surgery and therefore, differs to the address on a prescription.
