Document Why have I been sent a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) for my prescriptions?

Since 16 September 2014, the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) has operated the Prescription Exemption Checking Service (PECS) and checked prescription claims on a monthly basis. If you've incorrectly claimed for prescriptions and your prescription is checked, you will be sent a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

The PCN will request payment for the prescription charges and an additional penalty charge, which is five times the amount owed (up to a maximum of £100). If payment isn't received within the required timescale, you may be liable for an additional surcharge and further court proceedings.

If you wish to make a payment or provide further information, you can visit our website or contact the helpline.
