Document What is the Personal Allowance?

Your personal allowance is an amount included in your assessment, intended to cover normal day to day living expenses such as food, clothing, utility bills and telephone charges. The amount is based on the equivalent weekly amount of Income Support that would be paid to an individual or couple of the same age as you.

From 8 April 2019, the personal allowances depending on your age and relationship status are as follows;

• £57.90 - If you are single and aged less than 25

• £73.10 - If you are single, aged less than 25 and you receive Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) with a component or have been treated as incapable of work for 28 weeks or more

• £73.10 - If you are single and aged 25 to 59

• £167.25 - If you are single and aged 60 or over

• £114.85 - If you are in a couple and aged less than 60

• £255.25 - If you are in a couple and aged 60 or over

• £73.10 - If you are a lone parent (any age)
