Document Does the EHIC cover the provision of oxygen?

Yes, if you are traveling in Europe, oxygen can be arranged through the EHIC. You will need to have a valid EHIC and you will have to use the authorised oxygen company for the country that you are travelling to. If you need oxygen for use throughout your holiday, you will need to make arrangements for the oxygen to be provided before you travel. Your home supplier will not be able to provide oxygen for you if you are travelling overseas.

Please see the NHS website for further information.

Alternatively, you can contact the British Lung Foundation Helpline:
Canary Islands- when oxygen prescribed is under 15 hours per day

In the Canary Islands there is a required minimum of 15 hours a day of prescribed oxygen therapy in order to have treatment organised through the Spanish health authorities, and therefore on the European Health Insurance Card.

If you do not meet the required minimum of 15 hours a day, you can apply to the private company Oxicanarias. You must apply online. Oxicanarias will not consider applications that are not registered in this way. Please note that this is a private company therefore you will need to pay the costs up front. You may contact the team directly on 0044 191 218 1999(option 1) for information on possible reimbursement for the cost of private treatment. Please remember to retain your receipts.
