Document What is the card number and how does this relate to me?

The card number is the ‘logical identification number’. The number is made up of two parts:
  • The first 10 characters identify the card issuer
  • The last 10 digits constitute the unique serial number of the card

The unique serial number of the card enables information carried by the card to be checked against the information held on the EHIC database, for example to reduce the risk of fraud when processing a claim for reimbursement.
