Document What is an Allied Health Professional (AHP)?

An Allied Health Professional (AHP) is an umbrella term that covers various healthcare professions. For courses that started prior to 1 August 2017 the following AHP courses are eligible for support under the NHS Bursary Scheme:
  • Chiropodists
  • Podiatrists
  • Dieticians
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Prosthetists
  • Orthotists
  • Radiographers
  • Speech and Language Therapists
AHP courses starting on or after 1 August 2017 no longer attract NHS Bursary funding, with the exception of students on postgraduate programmes if studying on a place commissioned by Health Education England, students on dental hygiene and dental therapy courses and a capped number of students on part time programmes, which remain funded through NHS Student Bursaries in the 2017/18 academic year under transitional arrangements.
