Document What is the New Medicine Service (NMS)?

New Medicine Service (NMS) forms part of the Advanced Services within the community pharmacy contractual framework. Drug Tariff Part VIC sets out the arrangements to pay pharmacy contractors for the NMS. The requirements a pharmacy contractor must meet for this service are set out in the principal Directions to PCTs in England.

The service provides support for people with long-term conditions newly prescribed a medicine to help improve medicines adherence; it is initially focused on particular patient groups and conditions.

NMS commenced on 1st October 2011 and was implemented as a time-limited service commissioned until December 2013; it will continue beyond this time if all parties agree that the service has provided demonstrable value to the NHS.

Further details are available in Drug Tariff Part VIC and on the PSNC's website. Click here to view.
